The Toyodaya Restaurant in Jinzaemon-cho, 1869

Series; Colors of Spring at Thirty-six Restaurants

Colors of Spring at Thirty-six Restaurants - Attractive image from Yoshiiku's 1868 - 1869 series featuring beauties in contemporary restaurant settings. The women are shown playing music, waiting for visitors in private quarters, enjoying a few leisure moments, or arriving at restaurants. These vibrantly colored, beautifully detailed woodblocks offer a charming look at Meiji era life. Although the beauties wear traditional dress, many subjects feature Western-style perspective in the architectural detail. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has many of these designs in its collection. A lovely series.
