Woodblocks by Toshijiro (Nenjiro) Inagaki - Fantastic modern design printed from a single woodblock using multicolor inks in a variety of tones. Toshijiro (or Nenjiro) Inagaki was an acclaimed kimono designer who was designated an Intangible Cultural Property in 1962, the highest honor awarded to Japanese artists by the government. In the 1950s - 1960s, he designed a small group of woodblock prints published by Mikumo Mokuhansha in Kyoto. These stylized designs reflect the stencil-dyed techniques he used to create textiles, featuring geometric shapes and unusual gradations of color. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has several prints by Inagaki in its collection. This print is from a posthumous edition published by Mikumo Mokuhansha, with artist's "Toshi" seal in lower right corner.
