Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yoritomo, Kumagai Renshobo, and Yoritomo's Daughter, 1850

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene depicting the Minamoto warrior Kumagai Renshobo raging angrily at lower right, grimacing as he holds out his sword in one hand and a fan in the other. At upper left, the nobleman Minamoto no Yoritomo stares back at him with a worried frown. Yoritomo's ill daughter appears at upper right, her eyes closed as she rests her face upon her hand. She has an invalid's sash tied around her forehead, and her hair is strangely flying up above her head. Great expressive figures, beautifully detailed with burnishing on Kumagai's black vest and court cap, burnishing on the hair of the three men at left, and embossing on the white kimono collars and fans.
