The Shogun Hunting Boar at Koganehara, 1889

Series; Flowers of Edo in Old times

The Shogun Hunting Boar at Koganehara, 1889 - Terrific illustration of a boar hunt at Koganehara (Kogane Plain), with the shogun seated on a gray horse at right, watching as his retainers prepare to down a large wild boar. The enraged animal snarls and leaps in the air under a shower of arrows as the archers approach, hitting their target several times. Rabbits, foxes, and deer scatter across the field as beaters on foot drive the animals into a fenced enclosure where archers pursue them on horseback. A viewing pavilion is set atop a stepped mound in the center, a large fringed standard fluttering in the air above and another flying at left. A fantastic scene filled with action and wonderful detail. Includes a dusting of mica over the boar and touches of burnishing.
