Osumi and Satsuma Provinces

Series; Modern Style Set of the Provinces in Edo Brocade, 1852

Osumi and Satsuma Provinces - Interesting print from a Kuniyoshi series pairing kabuki scenes with two provinces. The top design for Osumi Province shows the courtier Shunkan in exile, clinging to a rocky outcropping and gesturing desperately as a ship sails away into the distance, the wind blowing his tattered robes. His daughter kneels on the shore beside him as waves crash against the rocks. below, the scene for Satsuma Province features Arashi Kichisaburo III as Satsuma-no-kami Tadanori, a member of the Taira clan who served as governor of Satsuma Province. He looks over his shoulder with an angry scowl as he pushes up the sleeve of his brocade robe, three guards waiting behind him. A handsome design from this rarely seen series.
