Comments - Terrific depiction of the famous statue of Saigo Takamori in Ueno Park. Saigo earned fame for leading the Imperial troops and restoring the Emperor to power after ending the Tokugawa Shogunate in 1868. He later led rebel samurai against the Meiji government during the Satsuma Rebellion, committing suicide after the rebellion failed. The statue was erected in 1898. Here, crowds gather around the massive sculpture atop a tall pedestal, admiring this much-respected hero, shown simply dressed in a kimono with his dog on a leash. At left, a young boy in a Western sailor suit points at the sculpture as he chats with his mother, who wears a burnished black coat over her kimono. The colorful pink blossoms of the cherry trees provide a lovely backdrop for the statue. A handsome Meiji era subject.
