Series; A Newly Published Set of Shadow Pictures, 1867

A Newly Published Set of Shadow Pictures - Kuniteru II's rarely seen 1867 series "A Newly Publisher Set of Shadow Pictures" features profile portraits of actors in silhouette in shaped insets against a shoji panel. The portraits are carefully drawn with attention to the individual features and hairstyles, with some figures drinking from cups and one applying makeup with a brush. Each print includes three actors, with a fluttering poem slip at upper right serving as the series title. A small crest in red accompanies each figure. An interesting and unusual format.

Image Size - 13 1/2" x 9 1/4" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Small paper remnants on reverse at top corners from previous mounting. Small loss at corner, stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and spotting, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
