Horizontal Oban Kabuki Prints by Toyokuni III - Handsome design from an untitled series of horizontal kabuki prints by Toyokuni III dating from 1847 - 1852. The horizontal oban format is an interesting departure from the more commonly seen vertical oban actor prints, allowing Toyokuni III to create detailed settings for the characters. These images provide a nice context for the interaction between the figures. Some prints feature deluxe publishing treatments such as burnishing or embossing. An interesting complement to Toyokuni III's more well-known vertical kabuki designs.

Kiso Yoshinaka, the Priest Saigyo, and Princess, 1847 - 1852 - Interesting kabuki scene showing a confrontation between the priest Saigyo and the daimyo Kiso Yoshinaka as a princess watches. The priest strikes a pose holding a cloth bundle in his outstretched hand as he glares up at Yoshinaka. The nobleman looks back at him with a worried frown, while the beauty at lower right has a distraught expression, her mouth slightly agape as she offers the priest a woven hat. Another woman at left holds Saigyo's satchel and walking stick. The actors include Ichikawa Kuzo II as Yoshinaka, Sawamura Chojuro as Saigyo, Onoe Baiko IV, and Iwai Kumesaburo III. Note that the pigment used on Saigo's face and arms has oxidized to dark spots. A handsome design.
