Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Evil Gonta Carrying His Son, Zenta, 1856

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the famous play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" of the evil Gonta carrying his young son Zenta, on his back. He looks up with a distraught expression, his brows furrowed and mouth open. One sleeve of his blue and black checked kimono has been pushed down to the waist, revealing a black undergarment. The boy smiles slightly, holding a basket in one hand. In the play, Gonta at first appears as a gambler and thief, but he redeems himself by sacrificing his wife and child to save his father, a secret only revealed as he is dying. The bright yellow background on this print is rarely seen in Edo era woodblocks. Nice expressive figures with fine line work in the hair and soft bokashi shading.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 9 3/8" + top margin as shown
