Scene from Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura, 1856

Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura" of a confrontation taking place at a tea stand. At right, the samurai Shume Kokingo draws his sword as he scowls at Igami no Gonta, who kicks at his arm as he sits on the ground, having fallen or been pushed down. At left, Gonta's wife Kosen watches with a slightly alarmed expression as she takes a hairpin from her hair, her mouth slightly agape. She holds a cup tray in her other hand, and has an apron wrapped over her plaid kimono. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV, Ichikawa Kodanji IV, and Kawarazaki Gonjuro I. A kettle can be seen atop a brazier at upper left. Nice expressive figures in an interesting setting.
