The Kabuki Play Chinzei Hachiro, 1884

Comments - Fascinating scene from the kabuki play "Chinzei Hachiro." In the center, an elderly priest with a flowing white beard angrily waves a leaf fan above his head as he glares at the young warrior at left. He is surrounded by a cloud of white smoke, and stands next to a stone statue of a goddess. At left, the samurai Hachiro Tametomo, a noted archer, holds a bow in one hand and a few arrows in the other as he emerges from among tall grasses. The young Chinese beauty in the center wears a brightly colored robe trimmed with a ruffled collar. At right a strange tiger-like animal with glowing yellow eyes and horns snarls ferociously, the samurai looking up solemnly with a sword in hand. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro IX, Nakamura Fukusuke IV, Nakamura Shikan IV, and Ichikawa Gonjuro I. An intriguing subject with vibrant color, detailed with embossing on the white beard.
