The Second Month (Kisaragi), 1859 - Beautiful triptych of the young Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, watching furtively as he stands beside small pavilion perched atop a hill overlooking a beautiful garden. The nobleman waits on the doorstep, his sandals removed, as a matron examines a letter at right, holding lantern aloft. Inside the pavilion, a beauty grabs hold of her kimono, shielding her face with her sleeve as if frightened of the approaching visitors, a roll of tissues caught between her feet. Stepping stones lead across the grounds below, with several buildings along the water's edge. A plum tree blossoms overhead, heralding the arrival of warmer weather. A lovely scene with wonderful detail, including burnishing on Mitsuuji's black robe and touches of embossing. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. An attractive Edo era design.
