Taiheiki Battle at Night, 1866

Comments - Terrific scene from the Taiheiki of a battle taking place at night under the pine trees in the mountains. In the center, warriors on horseback gallop along, facing samurai on foot wielding spears. At left, two men locked in combat tumble down the steep slope of a hill, each grimacing fiercely with eyes bulging. At right, a samurai offers a dripping helmet filled with water to a general on a black horse, who takes it with a solemn frown, his spear leaning against his shoulder. A great image with wonderful color and detail, in an atmospheric setting under a dark night sky. A beautiful clean, crisp print.
