Shingen and Kenshin at the Battle of Kawanakajima, 1876

Comments - Terrific kabuki triptych depicting the famous enemies Shingen and Kenshin at the Battle of Kawanakajima. From left, the actors are Nakamura Shikan as Takeda Shingen, Ichikawa Sadanji as Oni Kojima Yataro, and Bando Hikosaburo as Uesugi Kenshin. At left, Shingen stares over his shoulder with a tight-lipped frown, gripping an iron battle fan in his hand. He wears an impressive helmet topped with a horned demon and a flowing white wig, and wears a red robe over his suit of armor. The warrior in the center lifts an enormous iron club above his head with both hands, grimacing angrily. At right Kenshin clutches a spear made from a sharpened bamboo pole, wearing a cloth brocade headdress and green tunic over his armor. Great expressive figures set off by a deep red background and a simulated black lacquer frame border. Beautifully detailed with embossing on the white wig, lively color, and fine line work in the hair.
