Princess Chujo, 1887

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the tale of Princess Chujo, whose evil stepmother hates her and accuses her of a crime she did not commit. Here, the beauty kneels in the falling snow, pleading her innocence as the stepmother points a pipe at her accusingly. At left, another woman standing behind a pine tree has seen the confrontation. She lifts her woven hat for a better look, wearing a straw raincoat over her kimono as snow falls through the wintry gray sky. From left, the actors are Iwai Matsunosuke, Nakamura Fukusuke, and Kataoka Gado. The first time we've seen this handsome design.
