Benkei in the Subscription List

Comments - Handsome shin-hanga kabuki portrait of Benkei in the "Subscription List" (Kanjincho), one of the eighteen kabuki plays made famous by the Ichikawa Danjuro line of actors. Here, the quick-thinking Benkei pretends to read a list of subscribers to a temple fund when he and Yoshitsune's men are stopped while attempting to sneak across the Ataka Barrier disguised as yamabushi or mountain priests. A great expressive figure, nicely detailed with embossing on the white pants.

Artist - Torii Kiyotada (1875 - 1941)

Image Size - 8 3/8" x 7 1/8"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Light toning, a few small marks and spots. Please see photos for details.
