Yoritomo Hiding in a Hollow Tree at Ishibashiyama, 1896

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting the great leader Minamoto no Yoritomo and a few of his men hiding in a hollow tree following his defeat at the Battle of Ishibashiyama. Surrounded by enemy forces, his spy among the Taira, Kajiwara Kagetoki, stands atop the enormous tree trunk to divert Yoritomo's pursuers away from the hiding place. Kagetoki gestures to the sky as a Taira scout confronts him, pointing at two birds in flight. A bold design with a terrific composition and handsome calligraphic line work in the tree trunk and grasses.
