Swordfight and Dying Man, 1860

Comments - Dramatic, gory kabuki scene of two men fighting with swords, the fellow at left bleeding profusely from his mortal wounds. Another man tries to hold him up by his robe while the dying man clutches at his arm, leaving bloody handprints. His face is shaded blue around his eyes, a sign of his impending death. At right, his attacker continues to slash at him, staring ahead with a grim frown, while behind him, a companion lifts a heavy stone statue of a deity above his head as if ready to throw it down. Nicely detailed with a subtle burnished pattern on the attacker's kimono and burnishing on the black kimono collars.

Image Size - 13 5/8" x 18 1/2"
