Kawarazaki Gonjuro as Nagoya Sanza and Sawamura Tanosuke as Katsuragi, 1861

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the tale of Nagoya Sanza, a samurai who was banished from his clan after the evil Fuwa Banazamon stole a valuable scroll in his care. Here, Sanza visits Katsuragi, his former wife who became a courtesan to provide him with funds to search for the scroll. He strikes the end of his cased sword on the hem of her kimono as she attempts to walk away from him, frowning unhappily. She smiles sweetly back at him as she tugs on her robe with one hand, a roll of tissues held above her head in the other. At right, Sanza's enemy Banzaemon spies on the couple through a window. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro, Sawamura Tanosuke, and Nakamura Shikan. Beautifully detailed with a burnished geometric pattern on Sanza's black kimono. An attractive design.
