Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichimura Uzaemon as Ushiwakamaru in a scene from the play commonly known as "Kiichi Hogen," a drama about the retired Taira warrior Kiichi Hogen and the disposition of his books of military strategy. The young Ushiwakamaru (later Minamoto no Yoshitsune) joined his household disguised as the servant Torazo to in an effort to secretly obtain the books. Here, Ushiwakamaru looks up with an angry frown as he holds out the books wrapped in a purple cloth. His outer kimono is pushed down to the waist to reveal a red kimono patterned with the paulownia symbol of the Genji clan. A handsome design.
