Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Beauty's Morning Toilette

Comments - Attractive scene of a beauty at her morning toilette, leaning over a lacquer basin of water as an attendant washes her back. At left, a young girl carries in a matching black lacquer chest with combs on top of it, while another woman holds out an elegant kimono for the beauty to wear. The robe is shaded from plum to yellow and decorated with heart-shaped leaves in different patterns. An alcove holds a scroll and a floral arrangement in a base atop a small lacquer stand. Wonderful detail in the household setting and furnishings. Includes burnishing on the black obi at left, a burnished check pattern on the attendant's black obi, and embossing on the white kimono. A lovely design.
