Original Kunisada II (1823 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Evening Picnic, 1858

Comments - Attractive view of three beauties enjoying a picnic in the evening along the shore of a pond, all wearing matching pink vests over blue kimono, with black court caps hanging over their shoulders. The standing woman holds a blue and white ceramic bottle of sake, biting anxiously on a towel. Her two companions seem slightly agitated by her behavior. At right, Prince Genji, a beauty and a young page carrying his sword stroll beneath the blossoming cherry trees, the woman carrying a lantern. An interesting subject with a lovely garden setting. The first time we've seen this Kunisada II design.
