Comments - Terrific kabuki portrait of an actor as Takechi Mitsuhide in a play about the life of the great daimyo Toyotomi Hideyoshi. A retainer of Hideyoshi, Mitsuhide treacherously betrayed and attacked his master, leading to Hideyoshi's death. Here, he flings a hat into the sky above him, wearing a straw raincoat over a suit of armor and an olive green print robe. An inset at upper right depicts a samurai wears a vest over his armor and holding a tasseled command baton. Gourds hang from a vine at upper left, a reference to Hideyoshi's gourd crest. The actor may be Ichikawa Kodanji, but we are not certain. An incredible, bold image and a fantastic choice for a kabuki enthusiast.
