Comments - Terrific scene from the Battle of Ichi-no-tani between Taira and Minamoto forces. The Minamoto warrior Kumagai Naozane chases after the young Taira Atsumori, who has ridden his dappled horse into the water in an effort to escape. From astride his mount, Naozane waves his folding fan at the youth, taunting him to return to shore and engage in combat. After capturing Atsumori, he realizes that he is a young prince in his first battle, but he is honor bound to kill him. He tearfully beheads the boy, who is the same age as his own son, and later becomes a Buddhist monk. The surf rolls in white-capped waves along the shore, while the battle continues between the boats beyond as archers fire at the enemies. A dramatic image of this famous tale, beautifully detailed with fine bokashi shading in the night sky.
