The Quarrel over Reversed Oars, circa 1839 - 1841 - Interesting scene of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and his retainers gathered at an encampment overlooking the ocean. Just prior to the naval Battle of Yashima in 1185, Kajiwara Kagetoki suggested that the ships be equipped with reversed oars to allow them to move backwards if needed. Yoshitsune reacted angrily, accusing Kajiwara of cowardice. Here, the nobleman leaps to his feet, frowning with displeasure, his hands clenched as one of his retainers pleads with him to remain calm. Each of the men is dressed in full armor, and the encampment is surrounded with tent walls bearing the Minamoto family crest. Great expressive figures.
