Fighting on a Statue of the Lord of Hell, 1847 - 1852

Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Gappo ga tsuji" of a pilgrim fighting on a giant statue of Emma-o, the Buddhist deity of the underworld. The sculpture provides a dramatic backdrop for the struggle. He brandishes a sword in one hand and a spear in the other as he bravely faces the weapons thrust at him from below. At left, he has sent an attacker flying head over heels through the air, while another sprawls on the ground below. A lively action scene and a memorable kabuki image.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels. Vertical folds. Small losses at corners, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight toning, soiling, and creasing. Please see photos for details.
