Comments - Terrific okubi-e or large head kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Ichizo III as the hairdresser Saizaburo. Formerly a samurai, Saizaburo was disowned by his father after having an affair with a family servant. Here, he looks up with a worried frown as he anxiously twists his fingers. He wears an intricately patterned blue tie-dyed summer kimono over a red under robe with a black collar, a dotted towel draped over his shoulder. His hair is pulled back into a top at the side of his head. A great expressive figure, detailed with extremely fine line work in the hair, burnishing on the black collar, and bokashi shading in the background. A great example of Toyokuni III's okubi-e.
