Original Shin-hanga & Modern artist (not read) Japanese Woodblock Print
Iwakura Tomomi

Comments - Handsome scene of a Iwakura Tomomi attending an audience with a daimyo. Tomomori was a Japanese stateman during the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and during the Meiji era. He kneels respectfully in front of an imposing array of nobleman, each dressed in identical dark delicate patterned gray robes. The only difference between the men's attire is the headgear: the daimyo wears a court cap with the tail trailing down over his back, rather than curled upwards. A very solemn occasion, with the men looking soberly at the samurai, who sits quietly. Beautifully drawn with very fine line work and detail. An attractive design, published by Watanabe with "F" seal embossed in left margin, in use 1934 - 1941.
