Heating Incense in the Bedroom in Vain, 1852

Comments - Intriguing scene from the tale of Mitsuuji, the "Country Genji," of the nobleman and a samurai visiting a beauty in her private quarters. The samurai kneels at left, holding up a wrapped package before him and looking directly at the surprised woman, who startles and falls backwards onto her bed. Another woman eavesdrops from behind the elegant folding screen surrounding the sleeping area. Fantastic detail in the gorgeous kimono fabrics and luxurious furnishings, including burnishing in the black obi draped over the folding screen and the samurai's black kimono. Notice the image of Mt. Fuji on the sliding screen in the next room. The title is perhaps some sort of pun as no burning incense can be seen in the image. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A terrific image with beautiful detail.
