Ichikawa Kuzo II as Genkuro Yoshitsune, 1847

Comments - Interesting portrait of Ichikawa Kuzo II as Genkuro Yoshitsune in the kabuki play "Yoshitsune Senbon Zakura." He carries the young Taira Emperor Antoku on his shoulder, looking to the side with a worried expression. After the Taira's defeat by the Minamoto at the Battle of Dan-no-ura, Antoku's grandmother decides that she and Antoku will commit honorable suicide, but Yoshitsune arrives to stop them. The samurai wears a red vest over a suit of armor and a print gray kimono tucked into green pants patterned with clouds, the paulownia crest of the Minamoto clan just visible on his chest plate. A border of clouds separates the figures from undulating waves. Nice expressive figures.
