The Tale of the Soga Brothers: The Tenth Cut, circa 1825

Comments - Dramatic depiction of the Soga Brothers' night attack on the Shogun Yoritomo's hunting camp at the foot of Mt. Fuji. The brothers waited years to avenge their father's death at the hands of the nobleman Suketsune. When Suketsune accompanied Yoritomo while hunting, the brothers attacked in the middle of a rainy night. At right, the older brother Juro rushes forward with his sword in hand, leaping across a rivulet. At left, the samurai Nitta Shiro Tadatsune strikes Juro with the handle of his pole arm, hitting him across the shoulders. At bottom center, a man uses a flaming umbrella as a torch, while at left center, a man wearing only a loincloth grips a beauty by the hand as they flee to safety. A terrific design with wonderful detail.
