Series; A Tokaido Board Game of Courtesans: Fifty-three Pairings in the Yoshiwara

Hakone: Uryuno of the Okamotoya, circa 1821 - 1823 - Lovely portrait of the courtesan Uryuno of the Okamotoya, sliding aside a panel as she prepares to enter a room. She wears a striking outer kimono shaded from blue to light green with a design of a rooster atop a drum covered with leaves. The design comes from the old tale of a drum placed outside the palace gates, for visitors to sound when desiring an audience with the daimyo. During times of wise rule, the drum was never needed, so roosters could rest atop the drum undisturbed and vines grow over it. The inset at upper left depicts the countryside at Hakone, with the lake visible at left and pines growing thickly along the shore. An attractive image, beautifully detailed.
