The Ghost of Oiwa, 1861

Comments - Great kabuki scene from the tale of the beauty Oiwa, who was poisoned by a jealous neighbor who wanted to marry her husband, the ronin Tamiya Iemon. After she died, Oiwa returned as a spirit to haunt Iemon. Here, the ghost of Oiwa appears at right, tugging on a narrow sash held by her husband. The flame dancing in the night sky beside her indicates a supernatural presence. At left, Iemon scratches his head in a puzzled manner as he looks up, while Takiyama Chobei peers over the edge of the robe he is holding up with a worried expression. The actors are Ichikawa Raizo as Chobei, Kataoka Nizaemon as Iemon, and Bando Hikosaburo as the ghost of Oiwa. Detailed with faint cloth embossing on the beauty's white kimono.
