Kawarazaki Gonjuro I as Ukiyo Inosuke and Sawamura Tanosuke III as Wakakusa of the Wakanaya, 1860

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a couple strolling along a street at night, the buildings behind them silhouetted in black against the dark sky. The beauty Wakakusa of the Wakanaya smiles as she adjust her obi, a roll of tissues caught between her teeth. Her companion, Uikyo, Inosuke, fastens a blue cloth around his head against the chill evening air. He wears a blue and gray kimono over a red under robe, a single sword tucked at his side. Beautiful fine line work in the hair and fine architectural detail in the buildings. From left, the actors are Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and Sawamura Tanosuke III. A terrific image with an atmospheric setting.
