Along the Sumida River, 1854

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of the man Kirare Yosa attempting to stop a ferry on the Sumida River as it prepares to leave. He hurries down the snow-covered steps at right, throwing his hand out in a stopping motion, a worried frown on his face. At left, the samurai Sarushima Sota glares back at him as he lifts his hat for a better view. The beauty Okaru looks up at him with a sweet smile, while the monk beside her seems terrified. His black robe is in tatters, his face unshaven, and his hair has grown out atop his head. He clutches a blue cloth banner with writing on it. An intriguing image with expressive figures and a lovely natural setting.
