Dances Representing the Five Festivals: Ichikawa Danjuro VIII for the Fifth Month, 1854

Comments - Great kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Danjuro as Soga Goro Tokimune in a scene from the play "Yanone" (The Arrowhead). He grimaces angrily as he sharpens the arrowhead of an oversize arrow against a whetstone resting in a shallow wooden tub of water. He wears a black outer kimono patterned with his trademark butterflies over a yellow and orange checked robe and armor, his flared wig and red stage makeup emphasizing the brashness of this aragoto role. A striking design, beautifully detailed with burnishing on the black areas of the kimono, the wig, and the shaft of the arrow.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 3/8" x 9 3/4" + left margin as shown

Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Stitching holes at side, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
