Comments - Interesting image of the great general Kato Kiyomasa in an audience with a daimyo, possibly Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who took refuge in Momoyama after an earthquake demolished Fushimi Castle in Kyoto. Wearing a vest over armor, Kato Kiyomasa kneels in the center, scowling angrily as he looks up at the nobleman, who stares back at him. The nobleman sits on a cushion atop a platform, with three elegantly dressed beauties behind him. At left, samurai are gathered at the edge of the room, several holding iron clubs. Damage from the earthquake is visible at upper left, with a collapsed roof atop broken wall panels and window grates. A stone garden lantern is overturned are lower right. Kiyomasa successfully rescued many women from the castle, helping them to safety in the gardens. An intriguing subject, beautifully colored and detailed.
