Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Education of Children, 1899

Comments - Charming scene of young girls playing. At right, two girls play ayatori, a traditional string game known as cat's cradle in English, while their companion displays an origami crane she has just folded. At bottom center, a pair plays ohajiki, a game similar to marbles using pieces that are also called ohajiki. Behind them, two other children play pick-up sticks. The girl standing at upper left holds a ball, while a seated child nearby holds a battledore and shuttlecock for a game similar to badminton called hanetsuki. Wonderful color and detail in this playful design. The first time we've offered this Chikanobu triptych.
