Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Portraits of Nobility, 1885

Comments - Handsome double portrait of the Meiji Emperor and Empress sitting across from one another. The Empress holds a poem slip in one hand and a brush in the other, and she was a golden headdress. The Emperor wears a military uniform with a black jacket ornately decorated with gold trim. His plumed hat rests on a cloth-covered table behind him. A red lacquer stand in the center holds an arrangement of chrysanthemums in a blue and white porcelain vase, and the yellow folding screen behind them is adorned with falcons or hawks. A decorative border frames the design. A handsome, colorful image, detailed with touches of metallic pigment that have oxidized to a dark tone. Only the second time we've seen this Kunichika triptych.
