The Fight at the Eastern Temple, Rokuhara in Kyoto, 1851 - 1852

Comments - Fantastic battle scene of the Hojo defending the Rokuhara Temple in Kyoto against Imperial troops in 1333. A shower of arrows fills the sky from both directions as the encounter a pile of tree branches blocking the temple gate at right, where a couple of defenders wield swords and spears. At left, the warrior Mega Magosaburo Nagamune waits with his hands resting atop his sword, arrows flying past him. He wears a fine suit of armor and a battle helmet topped with antlers and a demon face. A guardian figure leers down from the fenced enclosure at top center while below, samurai make their way forward under wooden shields. A dynamic scene with a handsome composition and wonderful detail.
