Comments - Handsome depiction of the "Yugao" chapter of the "Tale of Genji." Prince Genji has stopped outside a house to admire the beautiful flowers known as yugao growing along the garden fence. He leans against his palanquin at right, grinning happily as his page chats with two beauties, asking who lives inside. At left, a matron is smoothing wet cloth onto a board so that it will dry fly, and the beauty behind her carries a lidded wooden pail and a sake bottle. Softly shaded clouds frame the scene, with a yellow border dotted with confetti-like shapes. An interesting subject with attractive color.
