Comments - Handsome scene from the kabuki play about the 47 ronin, "Kanadehon Chushingura." At left, Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan, leans forward with a distraught expression as she listens to the samurai at right, who glares at her with a tight-lipped frown. She wears a violet outer kimono with a beautiful burnished pattern over a pink kimono and red under robe, her hair pulled back into a ponytail tied with a violet cord. A lacquer bowl on the floor between them holds gold coins, and a lion decorates the standing screen behind them. An attractive design, nicely colored and detailed.
