Series; True Feelings Compared: The Founts of Love

Jihei and Koharu - A wonderful print from Utamaro’s esteemed series of famous young lovers. This beautiful portrait of Jihei and Koharu is considered the best from this lovely series. This young couple was immortalized in the tragic play "The Love Suicide of Amijima" performed in 1721. In this farewell scene, Jihei blows out the flame of a paper lantern, Koharu pressed close to his side. She wears a black silk veil, beautifully rendered in transparent tones. Fantastic old reprint with lovely color and excellent detail.
