Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Reprint

Series; Famous Places in the Eastern Capital

Teppozu - Wonderful view of men fishing at Teppozu in Edo. They sit on rocks above the undulating waves, a small net hanging from the waist of one fisherman as he waits patiently. His companion has just caught a fish, flinging his pole upwards to retrieve it. A beauty hidden by an umbrella drifts past in a boat, and ships can be seen anchored in the harbor in the distance as the sun begins to set, spreading a rosy glow along the horizon. A handsome scene from everyday life, beautifully colored and shaded. We've only seen this design in reprint once before.
