Miyagino the Filial

Series; Stories of Dutifulness and Loyalty in Revenge, circa 1847 - 1848

Miyagino the Filial - Terrific portrait of the beautiful courtesan Miyagino, gripping a naginata and holding a saucer in her extended hand. After learning from her sister, Shinobu, that their father had been murdered by Shiga Danshichi, the women swore to avenge his death. After secretly training in the martial arts, the sisters challenged Shiga to a duel and killed him, honoring their pledge. Here, she smiles as she looks back over her shoulder, the sleeves of her blue kimono tied out of the way with a red tie-dyed sash, and a white headband knotted around her forehead. A handsome image from this classic tale of family honor.
