Samurai Triplets, 1881

Comments - Fantastic depiction of the "Kurumabiki" scene from the kabuki play "Sugawara Denju Tenarai Kagami," which features three triplets named Matsuomaru (Pine), Umeomaru (Plum), and Sakuramaru (Cherry). The brothers become the victims of divided loyalties following the downfall of their sponsor, Sugawara, at the hands of Matsuomaru's treacherous employer, Shihei. Strolling outside Yoshida Shrine in Kyoto one night, Umeomaru and Sakuramaru run into their brother, who is accompanying Shihei in his royal cart. In a dramatic confrontation, Umeomaru grimaces up at the nobleman at left while Sakuramaru watches with a frown at center. A furious Shihei rages from on top of his cart, raising his arm above his head. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro, Ichikawa Sadanjji, Nakamura Sojuro as Shihei, and Ichikawa Danjuro. A great design with expressive figures and vibrant color.
