Original Yamakawa Shuho (1898 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Modern Musume, 1938

Comments - Handsome shin-hanga portrait of a modern musume or daughter, a contemporary young woman in Japan. She wears a tan kimono patterned with pine, plum, and bamboo, the "three friends of winter" over a pale pink under robe, tied with a rust colored obi featuring a large peony blossom. Her hair is pulled back into a low knot adorned with a dark red ribbon, with soft waves framing her face. A full moon is just visible at upper left. Published by Osaka Mainichi Publishing Company, this print was an insert "Japan Today & Tomorrow" in 1938. A very rare design by Yamakawa Shuho, who is known for his shin-hanga bijin-ga or portraits of beauties.

Image Size - 12 3/4" x 8 3/8" + margins as shown
