Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Meshitsukai Ohatsu, the loyal servant of the lady-in-waiting Onoe. When Onoe commits suicide after being humiliated by the senior lady-in-waiting Iwafuji, Onoe avenges her mistress's death by killing Iwafuji. Here, she stands in a doorway, clutching a cloth-wrapped parcel to her chest as she peer into the room at right. A sliding wooden panel decorated with peonies can be seen at right. Beautifully composed and detailed.
