Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Niwaka Festival, 1860

Comments - Lovely print depicting the Niwaka Festival in the Yoshiwara, with courtesans strolling in the foreground and lion dancers behind the yellow railing awaiting their turn in the procession. The beauty at right wears a blue kimono with a striking design of a leaping carp and wisteria. Cranes appear on the outer robe of the courtesan in the center, her kamuro or child apprentice dressed in a matching kimono. A charming design, beautifully detailed with embossing on the white kimono collars and trim, a burnished geometric pattern on the black border of the kimono at right, and burnishing on the black kimono at left.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 14" x 28"

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels. Small loss at edge, a few small holes, repaired. Slight toning, a few creases, slight paper remnant at side. Please see photos for details.
