Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Lovers under a Full Moon, 1890

Comments - Beautiful image of the young samurai Soga Juro Sukenari and his lover, Oiso no Tora, under a full moon in a lovely garden. A young girl tugs on the warrior's straw hat as he prepares to leave, while the beauty watches wistfully from her seat on the verandah. Sadly, Juro will not return to his beloved. One of the famous Soga Brothers, Juro, and his brother Goro, successfully avenged their father's murder in 1193 by killing his assassin, but Juro was killed during the fight and Goro was executed. A beautiful and moving scene from this famous tale of honor and revenge, with fine color and detail, including embossing on the beauty's white kimono. A handsome choice for a collector interested in classic Japanese tales.
